I write this reply in response to Peters poor review of the cafe, I was very sorry to read of your planned journey and such a poor visit. The young lady who had the concession to run the cafe since March this year actually left on 13th of June after repeatedly asking her to run the cafe on the same lines as previous years, the cafe is now being run by Jenny who has run the cafe prior to this with good cheer and good reviews. Once again you will find freshly prepared food on the menu, however some items are prepeared off site ( Cakes etc.) and sometimes items such as soup might be brought in as the cafe is after all a small watering hole for the Donald McGill Museum beyond the cafe. Nevertheless, I believe we are the only pure vegetarian/vegan outlet on the island and I hope you might consider coming back and if so please let us know and I will offer you and your family a complimentary visit to the museum beyond which I am sure will lift your spirits and I hope restore our faith in our cafe. My sincere apologies, Best wishes James & Co Positive James BT

I have just visited the The Orrery today 7/5/11 after looking on the web for good veggie food on the Isle of Wight. This cafe came up so off we went, looking forward to something nice to eat that was vegeterian. We arrived and saw there was lunchtime specials on for that day. We ordered the tomato & basil soup, and cheese and onion baguette for my daughter. The Soup cost £3.50, and the baguette was £2.50, watching the staff behind the counter the lady pulled out a tub of supermarket fresh soup, and heated it up in the microwave to my amazement, and when it was brought over in a bowl with very stale bread it was totaly disapointing. My daughters baguette was two pieces of ciabatta that was stale, and what looked like supermarket cheese and onion sandwich spread on top. The tea cup I was given was dirty and I had to take it back. If you are looking for good veggie, or vegan food on the Isle Of White I would suggest giving this place a very wide berth. Negative Peter

Friendly staff, good options on the food from cake to hot meals. The atmosphere is cosmic you are surrounded by plants and the images of Alice through the looking glass (telescope). At the back of the cafe is the Donald McGill post card museum and archive,(small charge to enter). It is well worth a visit to Ryde just to go and have a coffee, let alone the orrery and the museum. Hover travel are currently offering a free entrance to the museum when you travel with them,(April 2011). Positive Rachel Wheeler

The Orrery, we believe has to be one of the most lavish locations for a vegetarian venue. Muralled walls and Ceilings based on a celestial globe made using characters from Lewis Carroll's two Alice books, with one of the finest planetariums in the United Kingdom, in fact the planetarium we believe is surpassed only by 7 other far finer planetariums that we know of, and these are to be found also within the cafe! (cryptic puzzle). Beyond the cafe you will now has a superb museum! This museum pays homage to Donald McGill, King of the Seaside Postcard, who made over 12,000 comic postcards, for more information please visit our other website: www.donaldmcgill.info Thank you all for voting for our cafe, best wishes from all at the Orrery. (2.5 hours from London Waterloo, get a train ticket to Ryde Esplanade and it will include the fast ferry!) We are just 5 minutes walk from the station. Alternatively, drive to the Hovercraft terminal at Southsea, park in the car park opposite the terminus and we are 7 minutes walk up the hill. Both companies have discount tickets for day returns, look on their websites for printable vouchers. Positive James Bissell-Thomas

Well this was a dinner with a difference!.. As soon as the order was placed the efficiency of the staff and service was unsurpassed, it took minimal time for them to serve up my favourite veggie dish and as im from the West Midlands it was "Bostin Grub". I dont visit the I.O.W. often and i usually dont go to the trouble of writing a review but i felt i must as the food combined with the inspiring decor was brill and would definately pay a return visit year after year.... Well done The Orrery! you deserve it, cheers R.Lythgoe. Positive R Lythgoe.

This is the most unusual Veggie place I have ever visited. Although the cafe is not marketed as vegetarian, it most certainly is. The cafe is a Globe museum, beautifully decorated with a star lit ceiling map that can be viewed through the tables which have mirror surfaces. All designed around the Alice in Wonderland theme and even more amazing is the spiral staircase leading down to the toilets that makes you think you are trully going down the rabbit hole. Favourite dish Falfel and hummous in a warm pitta, scrumptous!! The cafe is non smoking and serves pots of herb tea. A must to any vegetarian visitor. Positive Kerry Ashmore
