The Best place in Guildford for Veggie Lunch. Quirky and totally unique atmosphere. Relaxed. Good portions. value for money. Freshly made 'home cooked' food using seasonal produce. The ladies can tell you exactly what is in each dish, which is helpful if you have intolerance for eg. to dairy (as I have) as they make everything themselves. The food is vibrant, in fact, when most restaurants provide the rather 'brown' vegetarian alternative the food here is like a rainbow. I have not had one bad meal yet, all have been absolutely delicious. I have even taken my non veggie friends there and now they are hooked!!!!! Although there is a different caterer on fridays which I have found the food to be rather boring. And now they are open on saturday lunch too! fab Positive thevegtroll

Food lovers vegetarian or not should make a point of taking lunch at the Beano, first floor of the Guildford Institute in Ward Street Guildford. Roughly opposite the Library. I am not a vegetarian but my wife is and as a result we have investigated countless restaurants over the years in the hope of finding one that caters well for both our persuasions. Leaving the joys of Indian food aside we have failed conspicuously to do so. That is until now. A lucky break in the work/life/school run mayhem allowed us to visit the Beano and it is, in a word, delightful. The food, all vegetarian, was truely delicious, freshly prepared, NOT over salted or over flavoured. I wont describe the dishes which we had but suffice to say, over the years I have variously eaten or witnessed being eaten enough bad/mediocore vegetarian ones to recognise the absolute delights that were presented to us. Go and enjoy, we will definitely be back soon. Positive Ivor Wilson

An absolute treasure in a town/county where there's very little in the way of vegan/vegetarian fare. A main meal is £4.25, main meal + 1 salad £5, and main meal + 2 salads £5.75. There were about 8 vegetarian main course options and 1 vegan, and all salads were vegan. The food was fresh and delicious. Desserts looked good, we didn't have any. A nice relaxed and friendly atmosphere. They're also open on the first Saturday of the month (in term-time). Positive Tracy Stokes

This is a treasure for veggies - run by the Guildford Institute, which is an off-shoot of Surrey University, this not-for-profit little restaurant offers an excellent selection of dishes, which change daily. The restaurant is on the first floor of the Institute which is just off North Street in the town centre, and has a charming old-world atmosphere, more like a cosy dining room than a public restaurant. It's popular so it is best to get there early as the dining room is not huge, although there is a small tea-room to one side (open from 10am for tea/coffee only). The food is varied, fresh and really tasty, and the prices amazingly low compared to most commercial venues. My partner and I visited The Beano on 24 March 2006, and had the "special deal" which consists of a main course, two salads, and pudding for £5.95 each. Excellent value for money, both in quality and quantity. There were seven different main courses, five salad selections, six different desserts available, plus a starter (soup) , and a choice of hot or cold (non-alcoholic) drinks, and home-made cakes. If you are in Guildford during the week and want to get away from the usual smokey, noisy commercial places, and want a 100% vegetarian meal, try The Beano. Positive Marten Tasker
